BlitzWeekend: Design, Build, and Launch in one weekend

Posted by JP Thu, 31 Jan 2008 20:58:00 GMT

BlitzWeekend: Thanks to Heri for bringing this to my attention:

The first - and hopefully not the last - edition of BlitzWeekend will take place this Weekend in Montréal. BlitzWeekend is a gathering of developers, geeks, technologists an entrepreneurs, divided into small teams, which each must design, build and launch a product in 48 hours!

Can’t wait to see what will come out of that.

Sad thing is, I can’t attend as I already had plans which make it impossible for me to attend or participate. I’ll definitely take a rain check though.

I made a mistake. Let it be known that the event will take place on the weekend of march 1st.

Groovy

Posted by JP Wed, 14 Nov 2007 09:50:00 GMT

Tonight, one of my friends from College, Jean-Sébastien Bournival, will be talking about Groovy and Grails at the Groupe d'Utilisateurs Java de Montréal.

The event is scheduled tonight, wednesday november 14th, at 17:30 (to ~19:30), at the CRIM, rooms A+B (how to get there?).

I'll be there, it'll be an excellent opportunity to get out of the house. Plus, some of my friends are going too, so it's all good.

My thoughts on Montréal on Rails 4

Posted by JP Wed, 07 Nov 2007 08:15:00 GMT

So I went to the Montréal on Rails event tonight. Here's my thoughts on the three presented topics.

Mathieu Martin presented JRuby, which is basically, from what I understood, a Java implementation of the Ruby language.

From my perspective, this is a very interesting project for deploying Ruby on Rails applications like you would deploy a Java application. You package your app as a WAR file and, voilà, you can run it on any existing Java server infrastructure. This is a big plus for RoR, and will definitely help RoR's spread in corporate environments.

Also, JRuby lets you use your existing Java libraries from your Rails (or plain old Ruby) application. It also lets you use Ruby code in Java applications, which is nice, but not as useful as the other way around.

Alain Pilon made a quick, yet interesting presentation about the acts_as_state_machine Ruby plugin. The plugin does exactly what it says, it turns any Rails model into a state machine. The plugin seems to have some limitations (one state only) and some clunky behaviors (initial state not set when object is instantiated with new, can set the state directly, bypassing all callbacks and validations, etc.).

Seems to me that acts_as_state_machine was written for a specific project and then abandoned when it was deemed "good enough". It could be a good starting point for someone who would like to fix it and make it work as it should.

Finally Sylvain Carle presented Comatose, a non-intrusive way to put CMS functionality into a Rails application. I will definitely look into this as I actually need something like this for a personnal project.

An interesting unconference, with door prizes to boot!
